2013 Recognition Event

Rebuilding Together President Charlie Shimanski gives his thanks to Oakland County volunteers


Rebuilding Together Oakland County (RTOC) leadership teams came together this past October for a “You Make Magic Happen” appreciation event. RTOC created the event to recognize and thank volunteer leaders for their efforts and all that they do to help those who are less fortunate. Volunteers representing over 40 teams attended!

Attendees were pleased and surprised to learn that Charley Shimanski, Rebuilding Together’s new National President and CEO, traveled all the way from Washington DC to participate in the event. He spent the evening meeting the men and women who make the magic in Oakland County. He thanked everyone for their involvement, and he reminded volunteers that our outcomes are often measured in “hugs” from homeowners who have lost hope.

He shared the story of a homeowner who recently told him, “Rebuilding Together was my resurrection.” Soon after the devastating loss of her son, she lost her job as well. On top of it all, she was simply not able to complete the work needed to maintain her home. She was terribly overwhelmed. And then she received an offer of help from Rebuilding Together in the mail. After reading the information and submitting her application, she knew she was on the mend. When Rebuilding Together volunteers came to repair her home she was overwhelmed once again, this time with thankfulness.

Charley reminded all of us that we have a great deal of work to do. In the last four years, the number of senior citizens who live below the poverty level has grown by 24% nationally. He ended with a challenge for all Rebuilding Together affiliates to increase their efforts to meet the burgeoning needs of low income homeowners.

We wish to extend a special thank you to Pres. Charley Shimanski and Tiffanie Kenney, RT Director of Affiliate Relations for Central and Midwest US, for joining us at our first Leadership Volunteer Recognition event. Above all many thanks to each and every volunteer who helped make the magic happen for over 112 low income homeowners and 4 non-profits in 2012-13!
